WE Solicitors were successful in recovering over £75,000 for a 92 year old former power station worker who had sadly contracted mesothelioma. This was caused through exposure to asbestos whilst working at Drax and Cottam Power stations from the early 1970s through the 1980s.
Before our client passed away he was able to provide us with a witness statement where he outlined the condition in which he worked. He was frequently exposed to asbestos dust throughout his working life, both a labourer for the Central Electrical Generating Board and later has a cleaner in the power station employed by E.ON.
It took a number of home visits to advise our client and obtain a full statement from him concerning exposure to asbestos.
Despite our client client sadly passing away during the course of the case his family where brave enough to pick the case up and pursue it to the end.
Liability was admitted relatively quickly by the insurers which meant the family did not have to go through the process of having to prove he was exposed to asbestos whilst working at the power station. A final settlement was agreed without the need for court proceedings.
Mesothelioma is an incurable cancer caused through exposure to asbestos fibres and dust. The cancer can take anywhere between 12-40 years to start showing symptoms and when diagnosed life expectancy is measured in months, rather than years, in many cases.
Asbestos was used widely throughout the 20th Century and was only totally banned in 2000 although different types of asbestos, (Blue & Brown Asbestos) had been prohibited for use earlier.
The use of asbestos was widespread largely for its insulation and fire proofing properties. Virtually all buildings prior to the 1980s will have asbestos in it somewhere and it still carries a dangerous legacy to this day as workers are still being exposed to old asbestos insulation.
