In May this year the beach at The Warren, Folkestone was closed due to fears of contamination.
Asbestos was found on the beach and following investigations, it has been confirmed that coastal erosion has exposed the substance from a former landfill site. The beach was closed for a month to allow a wall of rocks to be built around the area to protect it and testing was carried out which confirmed there is no significant risk to the public. The beach was re-opened at the end of June.
Often when asbestos is found in situations such as this it is as a result of illegal fly tipping. There are frequent reports of asbestos dumped illegally around the UK which could have devastating effects on those unknowingly exposed.
