Pleural Thickening symptoms, diagnosis and treatments

Pleural Thickening symptoms vary considerably from person to person and include:

  • Shortness of breath,
  • Chest pain and tightness of the chest

This is because the membrane is scarred and thickened, becomes constricted and less elastic. In some cases the symptoms can be severe and debilitating, whereas in others the symptoms are more manageable.

Diagnosis is usually by way of a chest x-ray followed by a CT scan.

Rather than requiring treatment pleural thickening, in the absence of asbestosis or malignancy, is usually monitored to check any progression or to rule out any other asbestos related condition.
